From Edo to Los Angeles - Shibari Portraiture Part I

Shibari, meaning "to decoratively tie” was formally known as Kinbaku (緊縛美) or “the beauty of tight binding” until the 1990’s when it was popularized in the western world through the works of Nobuyoshi Araki.  The sub-culture finds its roots in the Edo period of Japan (1603-1868 CE), a time of cultural and artistic growth.  Pictured here is rigger Sir Fin and his partner and “Rope Bunny” Sasori Michi.

These are a select few photographs I shot from a two part photo essay.  This first part I have done in a colorful fashion style, shot on Cinestill Film’s Tungsten Balanced 800t.
